You can book your theory online at www.direct.gov.uk or over the phone if you have a credit or debit card on 0300 200 1188, if you have neither or prefer to use cash we will book it for you but there is a small booking charge of £7.00 to add.

Study Resources

It is essential to prepare for this test and study of the Highway Code and a suitable theory book is necessary, however if you have access to a PC or DVD player the DVD Roms available are much more useful as they allow practice on the hazard perception element of the test. These are widely available, however the official DSA versions are on sale at our city centre office price £15.00 for the DVD Rom. Also available on download from DVSA or smart phone app.

DVDs in Polish, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, and Gujarati are available. These need to be ordered from 0800 783 1474 and cost £42.99 approx.

Theory Test fee (at going to press) is £23.00. The fee is the same for car or bike. (if you already have a full bike or three wheeler licence and are thinking of learning to drive, you may not need to take the car theory if you passed your test before the theory test was introduced, check with the DVLA on 0870 240 0009)

Please be aware of Unofficial driving test booking websites

Directgov is the only official driving test booking website. Other websites offer driving test booking services, but might charge extra administrative fees on top of the test fee. Those websites are not run by or connected to DSA or Directgov. We recommend that all learner drivers book their driving test through our office/instructor or the official booking service on Directgov by visiting direct.gov.uk/drivingtest 

 If you have used an unofficial booking website

 The DSA occasionally get complaints from customers who have used unofficial booking websites. In most cases these websites are doing nothing illegal. This means that their power to respond may be limited. If you have used an unofficial booking website, you might have seven working days to cancel your order and get all your money back. However, this will depend on the terms and conditions of the website you used. You can find more information about your consumer rights on Directgov
