Frequently Asked Questions

Training Courses

Your route to a Full Motorcycle Licence

After passing your CBT and Theory Test (not necessarily in that order - its up to you), you need to take the bike test.

If you can, it is advisable but not essential to book a half day assessment which allows us to gauge the right size and type of course for you.  Following this a test is allocated to you and the rest of your training arranged.  This can be an intensive course or in order to cause as little disruption to your usual life we offer evening and weekend training sessions alongside the usual day time training.  This flexible approach means the only time you need to take off from your work or college is half a day for your test.  Call  or email for a personal quote without obligation.

Which test you take depends on your age and what you want to ride.  If you are under 21 you can not take a Direct Access test (straight on to big bikes) however you can take a restricted test which means you can only ride motorcycles restricted to less 25kw output (approx. 33bhp) for the first 2 years or take the big bike test when you reach 21.  Most bikes can be restricted and costs varies (depending on the type).  If you are not into big bikes you only need take the light bike test which give you full entitlement upto 125cc.

Theory Test

Theory Test  fee (at going to press) is £31.00. Its the same for car or bike. (if you already have a full bike or three wheeler licence and are thinking of learning to drive, you may not need to take the car theory, check with the DVLA on 0870 240 0009.  You can book your theory online at www.direct.gov.uk or over the phone if you have a credit or debit card on 0300 200 1188, if you have neither we can do it for you but there is a small booking charge of £3.00 to add.

Study Resources

It is essential to prepare for this test and study of the highway code and a suitable theory book is necessary, however if you have access to a PC or DVD player the DVD Roms available are much more useful as they allow practice on the hazard perception element of the test.  These are widely available, however the official DSA versions are on sale at our city centre office price £12.95 for the DVD Rom and £5.99 for the theory test papers, you can also buy them through your instructor.

DVD's in  Polish Urdu Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati are available.  These need to be order from the office cost £42.99.

The Secret of our Success

First and foremost Pete, our chief instructor holds the highest qualification currently available in instructional techniques and roadcraft - THE RoSPA ADVANCED DIPLOMA*.  This was gained for his advanced training ability demonstrated to the highest standard in both the classroom and in-car environment, (we highlight this point because it is now possible to take this qualification on a motorcycle not then available when Pete qualified). These qualifications combined with his extensive training experience not only allow him to train motorcycle test candidates to the highest standards but also allows him to pass on his wealth of abilities to the motorcycle instructors who train and work alongside him. (For a full list of Pete's qualifications see his profile on our instructors page).

Secondly, Ideal do not operate a "one size fits all" policy. Training is individually tailored to build on your ability and experience.  This flexible approach allows us to design a training programme that fits you perfectly whist keeping the cost to you to a minimum - hence our impressive results.

* RoSPA Advance Diploma is recognised by the Driving Standards Agency as equivalent to the Fleet Trainer qualification. This qualification is available to DSA instructors seeking continued professional development (CPD is actively encouaged by the DSA). Training is offered to all instructors of PCV LGV MOTORCYCLE and CAR to attain this high level of competance (for details please refer to our instructor training page).

And last but not least, our team of dedicated professional instructors, most of whom are already qualified over and above the basic motorcycle instructors qualifications (see instructor profiles for details) work hard to make our training courses successful and enjoyable and continue to increase their own qualifications in order to offer the very best training experience possible.
