Instructor Training
In today's fast moving and complex road and traffic systems, the instructors main occupation, teaching new drivers the skills needed to survive, is not an easy one.
It is not enough to be a good driver who enjoys motoring, As a vocation, driving instruction demands a serious interest in improving the standards of new and experienced drivers. Hard work it certainly can be, but rewarding work.
Once qualified the benefits of a career as a driving instructor are clear; you are your own boss, and work the hours that suit you, earn a good rate of pay and meet lots of new people to name but a few.
Pete Hodgson DSA ADI, CertEd.
We are a highly motivated team of professional, fully qualified DSA Approved Driving Instructors, with qualifications in teaching, including c&G 730/7 and CertEd. Driving qualifications to numerous to list which include RoSPA Gold and RoSPA Diploma, with more than 20 years of training experience between us. We employ the latest techniques and have a considerably higher than the average pass rate.
As a Hull based training establishment specialising in Approved Driving Instructor training, we are ideally situated to offer training to a wide area, however if accommodation is required for intensive training we can provide a list of reasonably priced hotels in the local area.
Each course is uniquely tailored to the individual pupils needs, allowing you to progress as quickly as you require, although once passed your Part 1 exam you are required to qualify within two years (DoT regs.), however most are qualified with in the year, occasionally in as little as three months.
One important difference between us and other training establishments, is that we do not ask for payment of the whole course in advance. Each part of the training course is financed separately as you progress through the course, in this way a whole new career is within easy reach of anyone that meets the DSA register entry requirements as detailed below.
If advanced payment is necessary as with some company funding or Career Development Loans. Often banks and professional bodies will operate a staged release of funds - which allows you control over your own funding, and is the method we urge you to opt for which ever training organisation you use.
- Be a fit and proper person
- Have a full clean driving licence (max. 6 pts)
- Held a full UK EU licence for more than 4 years
During your part 3 training there are limited opportunities to take advantage of a six month trainee licence with our organisation or other companies that offer places, however, not all candidates find it necessary or beneficial to apply for a trainee licence. As a well respected local training provider we often have driving schools approach us requiring fully qualified ADI's and can in most cases secure you a job interview very quickly should you require our assistance.
Finally, a word to the wise - some training organisations offer a "Fast Track course" or a "guaranteed" job. The lure of a job is conditional in most of these offers, and can only be honoured if an organisation has a very low pass rate, six months on a trainee licence is usually what is meant - no substitute for a full qualification and life time career. A training course of this level (=NVQ level 3), is not an easy undertaking and is impossible to condense into a "two week or fast track course", please bear these points in mind when choosing your training provider
Part 1 - Theory + Hazard Perception Test
The course requires approx. 4/5 hours each week of home study, enabling you to attain the high standard of knowledge necessary to gain a pass in the Part 1 Theory exam (pass mark 85%).
Practise is also necessary with the hazard perception section of the test using the CD Rom provided with your starter pack. as it is necessary to become proficient with the system used. (pass mark 53).
The Exam is in touch-screen computer format conducted at your local Theory Test Centre (Hull centre is on the corner of Bond St, and George St) and consists of 100 multi choice questions on topics including the Highway Code, Basic Mechanics, Psychology, Law and Instruction Techniques.
The hazard perception section is designed to test your awareness and responses to various developing hazards in the form of 14 driving clips.
We offer a 2 day intensive Part One Preparation Course for £320.
(excludes test fees and starter pack)
Training for part one, two and three can be given concurrently if necessary, although the tests have to be taken consecutively.
This section of your qualification requires you to demonstrate to a Supervising Examiner your ability to handle a suitable vehicle and employ a high standard of road procedure and awareness (now also includes the new Show and Tell section). In order to reach this standard we offer advanced driver training, given in

Once you become a fully qualified driving instructor you will be required to submit to regular DSA performance checks or Check Test. Normally you will be advised within the first 6 month of qualifying. A grade will be given based on your performance. It is strongly advised to seek help from a specialist like ourselves if you have received a lower grade than expected or even an E for educational grade. If you do not improve your performance you run the risk of loosing your hard earned licence to teach.
An added bonus to gaining a higher grade is that you will not be called for another check test as soon in the future, as lower grade instructors are check more frequently.
